Back to Routine: How to Reset Your Work-From-Home Schedule After Summer

21 August

Summer has a way of changing everything.

Later nights, vacations, kids being home, weekend trips, unexpected plans, and a more relaxed routine can make it easy for your normal work schedule to slip.

But as August comes to a close and everyone starts settling back into a more structured routine, it’s the perfect time to reset your work-from-home schedule.

Whether you’re a seasoned remote customer service agent or you’re just getting started, a good routine can make a huge difference in your productivity, attendance, and overall work-from-home experience.

1. Take a Look at Your Schedule

Start by reviewing your upcoming commitments.

Look at your scheduled service hours, appointments, family obligations, and anything else that could interfere with your availability.

If you’ve been operating on a “figure it out as I go” schedule this summer, now is the time to get organized.

A predictable schedule makes it easier to stay consistent.

2. Reclaim Your Workspace

Your workspace may have gotten a little… lived in over the summer.

Take a few minutes to reset it.

Clear off your desk, organize your paperwork, check your headset, make sure your computer is ready, and remove unnecessary distractions.

You don’t need a picture-perfect home office.

You simply need a workspace that helps you focus.

3. Get Your Technology Ready

Don’t wait until you’re scheduled to service to discover that something isn’t working.

Take some time to check your:

  • Computer
  • Internet connection
  • Headset
  • Microphone
  • Required applications
  • Browser
  • Security software
  • Client systems

If your work requires specific equipment or software, make sure everything is ready before your next scheduled shift.

A five-minute technology check can save you a major headache later.

4. Reestablish Your Work Routine

If your summer routine involved sleeping later, working at different times, or taking longer breaks, your body may need a little time to adjust.

Start getting back into your normal routine.

Try setting consistent times for:

  • Waking up
  • Starting work
  • Taking breaks
  • Eating lunch
  • Ending your workday
  • Going to bed

Consistency helps your brain recognize when it’s time to work and when it’s time to relax.

5. Minimize Distractions

Working from home comes with plenty of distractions.

Laundry. Dishes. Pets. Family. Social media. Television. The list goes on.

You don’t have to eliminate every distraction, but you should establish boundaries around your work time.

When you’re servicing, focus on servicing.

Save the household chores for your breaks or after your scheduled work hours whenever possible.

Remember: being at home doesn’t mean you’re off the clock.

6. Check Your Client Updates

Before jumping back into your normal routine, take some time to review any important communications you’ve received.

Look for updates regarding:

  • Client procedures
  • Scheduling
  • Training
  • System changes
  • Performance expectations
  • Important announcements

Staying informed is part of being a successful work-from-home professional.

Don’t assume that everything is exactly the same as it was before summer.

7. Give Yourself a Fresh Start

A schedule reset isn’t about being perfect.

Maybe you’ve missed some hours. Maybe your productivity hasn’t been where you want it to be. Maybe your workspace needs some attention.

That’s okay.

A new season is a great opportunity to start fresh.

Set a few realistic goals for yourself and focus on what you can improve moving forward.
