The Time Shift: Understanding Daylight Savings Time

Twice a year, millions of people adjust their clocks for Daylight Savings Time (DST)—springing forward in March and falling back in November. But why do we do this, and does it actually help?

Originally introduced to make better use of natural daylight and conserve energy, DST was first implemented during World War I and later adopted by many countries worldwide. The idea is simple: shifting an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening allows for extended daylight hours, reducing the need for artificial lighting and promoting outdoor activities.

Important Reminders About Daylight Savings Time

Adjust Your Clocks – Most smartphones and digital devices update automatically, but don’t forget to manually change wall clocks, microwaves, and car dashboards.

Check Your Sleep Schedule – Losing or gaining an hour can disrupt your routine. Try adjusting your bedtime gradually a few days before the change to ease the transition.

Use It as a Safety Check – DST is a great time to replace smoke detector batteries, check carbon monoxide alarms, and review emergency preparedness plans.

Stay ahead of the time change and make the transition smooth!
