June 14, 2023 is Flag Day.  Have you heard of these fun facts about Flag Day?

  1. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States flag, which happened on June 14, 1777, by the Second Continental Congress.
  2. The idea of celebrating Flag Day was first proposed by Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, in 1885. However, it wasn’t until 1949 that Flag Day was officially established by an Act of Congress.
  3. The original design of the United States flag featured 13 alternating red and white stripes representing the 13 original colonies, along with a blue canton containing 13 stars representing a new constellation. Over the years, as new states joined the Union, stars were added to the flag.
  4. The current design of the U.S. flag consists of 50 stars representing the 50 states, arranged in nine rows staggered horizontally and eleven rows staggered vertically.
  5. One of the most famous American flags is the “Star-Spangled Banner,” which inspired the lyrics of the U.S. national anthem. It was flown over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and is now on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
  6. Flag Day is not a federal holiday, but it is an official observance. However, Pennsylvania is the only state that recognizes it as a state holiday.
  7. Many people celebrate Flag Day by displaying the American flag at their homes, schools, and public buildings. Some communities hold parades, ceremonies, and educational programs to honor the flag and its significance.
