Happy Father’s Day!

16 June

Father’s Day, celebrated on the third Sunday of June, is a special day dedicated to honoring fathers and father figures for their love, support, and influence in our lives. Here are some fun facts about this cherished holiday:

1. The First Father’s Day

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by the newly established Mother’s Day, wanted to create a similar holiday for fathers. She chose June 19th to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children.

2. Official Recognition

Father’s Day was not officially recognized as a national holiday until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed it into law. This came 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official holiday in 1914.

3. Father’s Day Feasts

Many families celebrate Father’s Day with special meals, whether it’s a home-cooked breakfast, a barbecue, or dining out at a favorite restaurant. According to the National Restaurant Association, Father’s Day is one of the most popular days for dining out, second only to Mother’s Day.

4. Honoring All Father Figures

Father’s Day is not just for biological fathers; it also honors stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, and any male figure who has played a significant role in someone’s life. It’s a day to appreciate all the men who have provided love, support, and guidance.
