Fun Facts about Halloween:
Candy Corn Was Originally Called “Chicken Feed”: When it was first created in the 1880s by George Renninger, candy corn wasn’t associated with Halloween at all! It was marketed as “Chicken Feed” because of its corn-like shape and colors, and it was sold in boxes with a rooster on the front. It wasn’t until the 1950s that candy corn became a Halloween favorite.
The First Jack-o’-Lanterns Were Made from Turnips: The tradition of carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns comes from an Irish myth about “Stingy Jack,” who tricked the devil and wandered the earth with a carved-out turnip to light his way. When the Irish immigrated to America, they found that pumpkins were larger and easier to carve, and the iconic pumpkin jack-o’-lantern was born!
Halloween is the Second Largest Commercial Holiday: In the U.S., Halloween is the second most commercially successful holiday, only behind Christmas. Americans spend billions of dollars each year on costumes, candy, decorations, and festivities. In 2023, Halloween spending was estimated to exceed $10 billion!
